SYNGONIUM
Scientific Name: Syngonium
Common Names: Arrowhead Plant
Description:
Syngonium is a genus of flowering plants in the Araceae family, known for their attractive, arrowhead-shaped leaves. They are native to tropical rainforests in southern Mexico, the West Indies, Central and South America.
Size: As vining plants, Syngoniums can grow quite large in their natural habitat, reaching heights of 10-20 meters (33-66 feet) or more by climbing trees.
Leaves: The defining feature is the foliage. Syngonium leaves are typically:
- Arrowhead-shaped, hence the common name.
- Glossy and come in various shades of green, sometimes with variegations of white, cream, or pink depending on the variety.
Stems: Syngoniums are vining plants with slender, aerial stems. These stems can climb with support (moss poles, trellises) or trail if left unsupported.
Uses: Syngoniums are popular houseplants due to their:
- Attractive foliage with interesting shapes and color variations.
- Air-purifying properties (studies suggest they may help remove some common indoor air pollutants).
