SAN PEDRO CACTUS

Scientific Name: Echinopsis pachanoi (previously known as Trichocereus pachanoi)

Common Names: San Pedro Cactus

Description:

The San Pedro Cactus is a tall, columnar cactus with a long history and cultural significance.

Stems: The defining feature is the thick, upright, columnar stems. These stems are typically blue-green in color and have 5-9 ribs running vertically.

Flowers: Mature San Pedro cacti produce large, white, fragrant flowers that bloom at night, typically in late spring or summer.

Uses:

Traditional Use: The San Pedro Cactus has a long history of ritualistic use in some Andean cultures.

Ornamental Plant: Popular due to:

  • Majestic, columnar form with beautiful night-blooming flowers.
  • Relatively easy care requirements (prefers bright light, well-draining soil, and infrequent watering) once established.
